Climate and Harvest
After a very late 2010, the 2011 vintage was characterized by a warm and dry climate that has led to an earlier harvest of the standard.
After a rainy winter the spring was warmer than usual, anticipating the growing cycle of the vine as much as 10 days. After budding a particularly fast and smooth - always a good starting point for a great year - the growth of the vines was slowed by cooler conditions in June and July. The rains arrive at the appropriate time after flowering and veraison have allowed a great development of the clusters. A spike of heat in late August has further accelerated the maturation leading to an early harvest in the last week of August. The September weather, sunny and no rain, which gave almost perfect conditions for ripening grapes that have occurred concentrated with a perfect balance of maturity of tannins and fresh acidity with an intense and mature. The harvest was completed in the last days of September.
Vinification and aging
The wine was made separately in small steel tanks respecting the different varietal characteristics during fermentation. The alcoholic fermentation was followed by malolactic fermentation, again in steel tanks.
The aging stage lasted 10 months in barriques of 2-4 years, previously used for aging wine Ornellaia. The time spent in small barrels, allows the wine to improve its structure by softening the vivacity of the tannins.
Le Volte is a blend created with utmost care that combines the best terroirs of Tuscany. Combine the Mediterranean expression of opulence and generosity with gifts of intensity and complexity. The softness of Merlot, the important structure and intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon supported by the vibrant personality of Sangiovese, create a unique blend that reflects the integrity and style that inspired the philosophy of Ornellaia.
